BIOGRAPHY OF JOAQUIM CHANCHO:
Joaquim Chancho, born in Riudoms, Tarragona, in 1943, is an outstanding artist whose work is characterized by his minimalist and, at the same time, rich, pure, rhythmic and intense approach. Throughout his career, he has explored the interpolation of gesture in geometry and has created successive sequences incorporating symbolic and calligraphic elements. In recent years, he has increasingly focused on the surface of the painting as pure abstraction.
Chancho’s work immerses us in painting in its most refined state, where the line becomes a sign and the color becomes an intense and essential vibration. This juxtaposition sometimes brings us closer to visual fields of stillness and silence, while at other times it generates clear expressive tensions, where the material density of oil color transforms the brushstroke into a gesture.
Two key exhibitions have summarized the evolution of his work: "Superficie i Color. Pintura dels setanta a Barcelona", held in 1997 at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona (MACBA), and "Tempo. 1995-1998", a solo exhibition on the paintings of that period at the Santa Mónica Art Center in Barcelona in 1999.
Joaquim Chancho’s work is part of prominent national and international collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the MACBA, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona, the Juan March Foundation in Madrid, the Atlantic Center for Contemporary Art in Las Palmas and the La Caixa Foundation of Barcelona. His contribution to contemporary art is appreciated for its unique fusion of minimalism and expressiveness.
