BIOGRAPHY OF EDUARDO CHILLIDA:

Eduardo Chillida (San Sebastián, 1924 - 2002) was a prominent Spanish sculptor and engraver. He began his studies in architecture in 1941, but soon abandoned them to dedicate himself to drawing and sculpture. In 1948, he moved to Paris, where he began to sculpt his first works in plaster and terracotta, still linked to the classical tradition.

Chillida considered drawings and engravings to be as essential as his great sculptural works. They were an integral part of his creative process, sharing approaches, schemes and geometric shapes.

In 1951, Chillida returned to Spain, settling in the Basque Country, where he began to work with iron in an abstract style that was also reflected in his graphic work.

Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous decorations and awards, participating in countless exhibitions around the world. Some of his awards include the Venice Biennale (1958), the Carnegie Prize (1965), the Rembrandt Prize (1975), the Prince of Asturias (1987) and the Imperial Order of Japan (1991). In addition, he was distinguished as an academic of Fine Arts in Madrid, Boston and New York, and received the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Alicante (1996).

Exhibitions of Chillida’s work were held in important international museums, such as the Kunsthalle in Bern, the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. (MNCARS) of Madrid, among others.

Chillida’s work is found in various public collections, such as the Guggenheim Berlin, the Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani (Spain), the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland, the Grenoble Museum in France, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía (MNCARS ) in Madrid, the Stadtische Galerie in Frankfurt, the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art in Iran, the Telefónica Foundation and the Juan March Foundation.
