BIOGRAPHY OF ÀNGEL PLANELLS (1901-1989):

Àngel Planells was born on December 2, 1901, in Cadaqués, where he formed a friendship with the young Salvador Dalí. Dalí was captivated by the fantastic drawings created by the young Àngel Planells at the La Mallorquina pastry shop in Cadaqués, where he worked. Planells also became close to René Magritte, with whom he had a direct connection due to sharing a temperament very similar to Magritte’s.

In 1929, the entire family moved to live in Blanes, a city with which Planells would remain connected throughout his life, despite spending many years between Blanes and Barcelona.

Positioned among the great artists of the avant-garde, Planells exhibited at the First International Exhibition of Surrealism held at the New Burlington Galleries in 1936. The Spanish representatives at that event were Dalí, Miró, Óscar Domínguez, and Àngel Planells.

His work is found in some of the world’s best museums and the most select private collections. The Art Institute of Chicago, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Gala Dalí Foundation, and prestigious collections like those of André Breton or Luis Buñuel, among many others worldwide, feature Planells’ creations. He passed away in 1989.

In 2007, the fifth anniversary of the creation of the Àngel Planells Foundation in Blanes was celebrated, dedicated to the dissemination and preservation of his work.
