Gustavo Torner, born in Cuenca in 1925, was a painter and sculptor. He initially worked as a Technical Forestry Engineer until 1965 when he decided to fully dedicate himself to painting. Despite being self-taught, he demonstrated exceptional drawing skills in 1941 when he created botanical illustrations for the "Flora Forestal de España."

After living in Teruel for some years, Torner moved to Cuenca in 1951. In 1956, he met the painter Fernando Zóbel, with whom he developed a deep friendship. Between 1963 and 1966, together with the painter Gerardo Rueda, Torner collaborated in the formation and establishment of the Museo de Arte Abstracto Español (Museum of Spanish Abstract Art), created by Zóbel in Cuenca.

Torner’s work initially showed a particular sensitivity to nature, as seen in his 1955 photographs of tree bark fragments, rocks, moss, leaves, etc. From this period, his art delved into abstraction with a series of landscapes featuring dense textures. Around 1958, his compositions evolved into horizontally divided pieces, playing with different textures and materials (rough-smooth, metal plates, etc.), evoking the landscapes and nature of Cuenca.

Gustavo Torner is challenging to categorize into a single discipline. He also worked on monumental sculptures, typically commissioned for specific locations. Over the years, his painting evolved towards a constructivist abstraction. In addition to his role as a painter and sculptor, Torner engaged in set and costume design for theater and opera, designed exhibitions for the Juan March Foundation, and contributed to the restructuring of new halls at the Prado Museum.

In Cuenca, he collaborated in 1977 with the team preparing the General Urban Plan of the city and participated in the design of new stained glass windows for the cathedral, installed in 1991. In 1987, the Spanish government awarded Torner the Gold Medal for Fine Arts Merit, and in 1992, he was appointed a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.
