BIOGRAPHY OF MIQUEL VILLA:
Barcelona, 1901 - 1988
Miquel Villa, born in Barcelona in 1901 and passing away in 1988, stands as one of the foremost representatives of Spanish Fauvism.
At the age of 13, his father, a wine merchant, took him to Bogotá, Colombia. Villa attended the School of Fine Arts there until 1918. In 1920, he discovered Paris, which would become his habitual residence until 1930. In Paris, he attended the Colarossi Academy and formed friendships with artists such as Jean Fautrier, Marcel Duchamp, Togores, Pancho Cossío, and the sculptor Gargallo. His primary influences came from Cézanne and, initially in his artistic career, from Maurice de Vlaminck. Villa also showed notable influences from the later period of Rembrandt.
From 1930 onward, he primarily resided in Catalonia: Barcelona, Masnou, Pobla de Segur, and spent some periods in Eivissa.
In 1985, Miquel Villa was honored by the Generalitat de Catalunya with the Creu de Sant Jordi.
