BIOGRAPHY OF JOAN PONÇ:

Joan Ponç, a Catalan painter, was born in Barcelona in 1927 and passed away in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France, in 1984.

In 1943, Ponç began studying painting in the workshop of Ramon Rogent, a painter he greatly admired. Around this time, he met Joan Vinyals, an antiquarian who became his first art dealer.

At the age of 20, he held his first exhibition and became acquainted with the poet Josep Vicenç Foix, poet and playwright Joan Brossa, critic and philosopher Arnau Puig, and typographer Enric Tormo.

In 1947, Joan Ponç founded the magazine "Algol," which had only one issue, in the company of Francesc Boadella, Joan Brossa, Jordi Mercader, Arnau Puig, and Enric Tormo. "Algol" was the precursor to the magazine Dau al Set, of which Ponç eventually became the director.

After a brief stay in Paris with Joan Miró, a mention at the São Paulo Biennial in 1955 earned him a scholarship to study in Brazil. In the same year, Ponç founded the "Taull" group, with members including Marc Aleu, Modest Cuixart, Josep Guinovart, Jaume Muxart, Mercade, Antoni Tàpies, and Joan-Josep Tharrats. Ten years later, in 1965, he won the Grand International Drawing Prize at the mentioned Biennial.

Joan Ponç’s meticulous and detailed work is a faithful reflection of his tormented life. His paintings feature phantasmagoric yet sorrowful and tortured images, with the subconscious as the protagonist. For Ponç, art is an introduction to the mysteries and secrets of the spirit.

He exhibited in cities such as Barcelona, Madrid, New York, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Bonn, Geneva, Tokyo, among others.
